Many scrambled to apply to Energex (or Ergon Energy) for the 44c feed-in tariff before the cut off on the 9th July 2012 and have not yet installed their solar power systems. Fears are increasing that many will run out of time and miss out on a great investment.

According to the Courier Mail, around 75 000 people in Queensland applied for the higher 44c feed-in tariff and around 42 000 of those are still yet to install solar power on their homes. In fact, there are still around 26 000 agreements that were sent out to customers have not been signed and returned to Energex. After all the hype to get applications in before July 9, 2012 the industry have seen a very poor follow through with less than half of applicants actually installing solar power.

With February 2013 coming to an end shortly, many solar companies are fearing that the remaining 42 000 applicants are going to wait until the last minute and risk losing out on long term gains. With four months remaining, we are urging applicants to update their solar quotes and get an install date. Securing the 44c feed-in tariff means that the solar system becomes a great investment. Missing out on this opportunity may mean missing out on thousands of dollars of income as well as the fact that one may never have to pay another electricity bill ever again. If too many customers wait until the last minute, there are many factors that can cause them to miss out, such as:

• Installers can only install so many systems per week – they will certainly run out of time

• High demand in a small amount of time may see shortages of certain stocks further delaying installation dates

• Rain or bad weather may hinder installations – those waiting to be installed days before the cut off at 30 June 2013 may fall short of time

Those with agreements that have not yet installed solar power need to ensure that their solar system is installed and meter box upgrades organized with Energy before 30th June 2013 to avoid missing out.

Many will not be aware that customers who have their agreements do not have to install with the solar company that initially did their application for them. Customers are free to install with any solar company and Energex will still honour that agreement. It is worth getting some information and doing a little bit of homework before installing. Ensuring quality components is essential if one is to get the expected returns on investment.
