There is a common myth that solar power is only installed by the wealthy or older couples who can afford it. This has never been more false! More and more young couples who are trying to buy their first home are realizing that solar power and other energy saving methods are just as important as buy their home.

Most have a power bill of between $400 and $600 per quarter. This is quite a large sum of money that they have to come up with each and every quarter AND the next bill always seems to be higher – BUT what if that amount was only $80 or less? That would make a huge difference to the budget conscious household. Although this amount may vary from quarter to quarter depending on the couples night time electricity usage, it would not be an ever increase electricity bill that has increasing rates or price hikes. In addition, now the couple also has some spare money every 12 or so weeks to put towards other bills, their mortgage or to treat themselves with (a rare occurrence in young couples who have just bought their first home!)

A 3kW solar power system is usually sufficient however, with most planning on having children or adding to the family home some opt to put in a slightly bigger system to cater for future increases in electricity use. Therefore a 3kW – 5kW solar system is usually installed.

Many include the cost of installing solar power in their mortgage because they realize that it is becoming a necessity. It is no longer an unrealistic luxury – it is now more affordable than ever and definitely saves you thousands over the life time of the solar system.
Other ways couples may try and be energy savvy include:

1. Installing energy saving light bulbs as part of their build – inefficient light bulbs can add a significant amount to your power bill every quarter. Buying LED lights can be slightly more expensive at the start but they pay for themselves very quickly and you will continue to reap the benefits.
2. Getting solar hot water or a heat pump installed – some still opt for an electric hot water system because of the price but our advice would be to get it installed with a timer if you choose to go down this path. That way you can control the hours it runs to avoid unnecessary costs. Gas is incredibly expensive to run and will add another constant cost to the budget so it is best avoided. The top two options would be to install a heat pump or a solar hot water system. They are extremely efficient and therefore cost less to run and maintain.
3. Get tinted windows where possible – tinting windows that get large amounts of sun on them can help with keeping the home cool for longer (so as to avoid turning on the air conditioner for longer) and also help stop curtains and furniture fading from prolonged exposure to the sun each day.

There are many other ways to reduce your power bill once you have your solar power system installed. For example, trying to use power hungry devices (washing machine, clothes driers, dishwashers etc) during the day when your solar system is generating electricity will save you money. The more you can reduce your night time usage, the less your electricity bill will be.
