Once again, Queenslanders will face another power price hike at the beginning of the next financial year. There are arguments about privatisation, future price rises abating or not, the cost of solar households to other consumers and most of all…whose fault it all is.
The Newman Government promised to give households a relief from excessive power bills and here we are once again on the verge of another price rise. As of July 1st, Queenslanders will face a 13.6% rise in electricity costs. This comes after a 22.6% price rise faced at the same time last year. In fact, electricity has increased by 50% in three years. The government has also been given independent research called the Orion Report which shows how to save customers on their electricity bills and yet it just keeps increasing.
“The price increases we’ve seen in recent years have been exceptional,” says QCA chairman Malcolm Roberts. “Some of the factors that have pushed those prices up – there’s good grounds to hope or expect that they’ll abate in 2015-16, but again there’s no guarantee about future prices.”
“They the LNP have and will say oh look, power prices are increasing even though we own the network let’s flog it off, wrong power prices are increasing because the Government is incompetent,” said Electrical Trades Union State Organiser Stuart Traill.
“We have seen this Government make one poor decision after another and now Queensland consumers will be forced to pay for the LNP’s incompetence. They have refused to consider the results of the independent Orion report which showed how the Government could save consumers $310 per year off their power bills, rather than facing an increase of close to $200 per year.”
Labor claims that the LNP is breaking its election promises and the LNP is saying that labor left the power industry in a mess and didn’t take responsibility for it. One way or another – the whole power industry is in a shambles!
