German solar company, Conergy is building a heart-shaped solar power system called the ‘Heart of New Caledonia.’ The 2MW system calls for some ‘solar love’ from the Abbott Government that is due to announce its stance on the RET shortly. It also mirrors natural beauty that is close to the people of New Caledonia’s hearts and will reduce their reliance on expensive fuel, gas and coal.

“With all of the uncertainty in the Australian market, the Heart of New Caledonia project will be a giant heart-shaped message to the government that it’s time to start loving solar,” said Conergy Australia’s managing director David McCallum.

The beautiful solar power system will consist of 7 888 solar panels across 4 acres on New Caledonia’s largest island, Grand Terre. It will help power around 750 homes and save 2 million tonnes worth of carbon dioxide emissions over its 25 year life time.

Coeur de VohThe design for the solar power plant was inspired by the “Coeur de Voh” or “Heart of Voh” which is a nearby mangrove of wild vegetation that mysteriously took on the shape of a heart naturally. The mangrove has become famous after arterial photography by environmental campaigner Yann Arthus-Bertrand and published in the best seller, “The Earth from Above.”

“The ‘Coeur de Voh’ is an important landmark for the people of New Caledonia, and shows just how extraordinary nature can be,” he said. “The ‘Heart of New Caledonia’ solar plant will be its man-made double, a landmark for clean power generation, showing that we can add new power plant wherever it’s required, and still keep a lid on carbon emissions. It will also probably be the world’s first beautiful PV plant, and perhaps the first beautiful power station of any description, anywhere on the planet.”

The Coeur de Voh definitely shows that our environment is absolutely extraordinary and we should be doing all we can to protect it – reducing emissions, producing clean power and reducing the pollution our extraordinary environment and its people are exposed to.
