Power prices in France and Germany have hit record lows as increased solar power output is expected to lower demand for electricity in 2014. More and more people are installing solar power systems off the electricity grid and are no longer reliant on other sources of energy.

Per Lekander, a Paris-based analyst said that “the unsubsidized solar growth should drive wholesale power prices further down.” According to Bloomberg, German electricity for next year has already lost 65 cents per megawatt-hour while the French has lost 15 cents. It is said that as much 18% of electricity demand will be replaced by off-grid solar power in Germany. These people are installing solar power in conjunction with a bank of batteries equipped to support their household and its appliances. This means the household will not be reliant on the electricity grid at all as the batteries will supply power in time when the sun is not generating electricity (i.e. at night.) With large numbers installing such systems, the demand for electricity from other sources is expected to drop.

Actions taken by the German Federal Government and their Energy Policies have vastly improved their economy. With power prices at an all-time low and employment at an all-time high, social and environment conditions are improving all the time. In the first half of 2012, over a quarter (25.97%) of all Germany electricity usage came from renewable energies.

Rising power prices in Australia are often blamed on solar power installations when the results out of Germany and France show that this is not true. In the long-term, installing solar power will be good for everyone. It will lower power prices, lower carbon emissions and greenhouse gases and create more jobs for locals in all areas – overall, a better economy.
