With the Queensland election looming, the Greens have unveiled their plans for the state and how to reap the benefits of being the ‘Sunshine State’ – giving ‘a fair go for solar.’

As a part of their ‘Fair Go For Solar’ the Queensland Green’s plan to:

  • Ensure a fair price for solar households by mandating that energy companies pay customers what their energy is worth at the moment it is produced rather than simply dictating the price.
  • Set aside $30 million for 60,000 low-interest loans with easy repayment schemes for solar panel installations through council rates.
  • Invest $40 million for 40,000 solar power and storage systems for social housing, low income households, and charities.
  • Kick start research into solar generation, storage and transmission and into solar business models with a $100 million investment.
  • Roll out a Queensland State Renewable Energy Target of 90% by 2030.
  • Oppose the privatisation of our electricity networks, no matter which party proposes it.

“We want to restore balance to the system by ensuring that electricity companies can’t make windfall profits from solar households, and that solar households get a fair price,” said Greens leader Senator Christine Milne.

The Australian Solar Council applauds the ‘fair go for solar’ plan. “The Queensland Greens understand solar saves money and creates jobs,” said John Grimes, Chief Executive of the Australian Solar Council. “The Greens are absolutely right to make a Fair Go for Solar a central plank of their Queensland election policy.”

“The Newman and Abbott Governments have been directly responsible for the loss of thousands of solar jobs in Queensland. Their anti-solar agendas have locked Queensland families into ever spiralling power prices.”

“The Greens have long been leaders in Queensland and across Australia in taking a strong approach to solar policy and climate change action,” said Mr Grimes.
