ACTThose wanting to install solar power systems in the ACT should get all their ducks in a row and fast! As of July 1st, the solar feed-in tariff is being slashed from a 1:1 basis on a gross metering scheme to 7.5c per kilowatt hour on a net metering scheme. Anyone wanting to install before the tariff is slashed needs to send a special connection request form to ActewAGL distributors before close of business on the 30th June in order to retain the gross metering scheme with a 1:1 feed-in tariff.

Sadly, the sudden cut backs have become a way of life in Australia and have been described as “an unfortunate tradition.” Cuts and changes to the metering schemes have already been experienced in Queensland, Victoria and NSW. The generally occur quickly, with little to no warning and have a ‘boom-bust’ effect. People rush in and try secure what benefits they can and then the solar industry experiences a significant downturn.

Those who already have a solar energy systems installed on the gross metering 1:1 feed-in tariff need not worry. Their feed-in tariffs will continue as they are until 30th June 2020.

In ActewAGL’s defence they said, “The cost of solar systems has reduced significantly over recent years and it has subsequently become more commercially viable for households to generate solar electricity without any subsidies.” They have said that this cut is part of their strategy “to keep the cost of energy in the ACT the lowest in Australia.”

Solar power with a feed-in tariff of 1:1 is a great investment and those in the ACT should be looking into it and taking advantage of the situation while they can. Many solar companies are offering interest free finance packages if need be as well.

Those in Queensland who submitted their paperwork for the higher 44c feed-in tariff are also reminded that their solar systems need to be installed by the 30th of this month in order to retain that feed-in tariff. Solar companies are urging Queenslanders not to leave it to the last minute as it will cause you to miss out on a great investment opportunity.
